UICB Studio Use Policy

It is the responsibility of each student taking a UICB course to help maintain general cleanliness and order in the studio classrooms. Always clean up after yourself and leave the studio spaces cleaner than you found them.

Rules for UICB Book Arts Studios

  • Only use equipment which you have been trained in on by UICB faculty or staff. This includes equipment you have used elsewhere, but have not received training in the UICB studios.

  • “Lights off/door closed” Policy: Turn off the lights and close the doors, when you are the last person leaving a studio. Regardless of whether you think a fellow student may come back into the room, please turn off the lights and close the doors when you leave. This applies at any time of day, and if there are people in other studios; it is especially important after 6:00 pm. The lights off/doors closed policy indicates to the custodial staff that they may enter and clean the rooms.

  • Be cognizant of how much space you are using, and who else may need workspace. Feel free to spread out when working alone, and be prepared to pull back in when other studio-users are present.

  • Focus conversations & activities on a productive working environment. When listening to music, podcasts, or programs, wear headphones. Take all phone conversations out of the studio.

  • Food and drink: work tables are not dining tables. For lunch or other meals please visit the Digital Lab (NH 15) and eat at the large tables, or on the 3rd Floor in Wild Bill’s (when the room is available), or sit in the hallway. Any beverage containers in the UICB studios should be lidded; please refrain from putting beverage containers on work surfaces or equipment. A stool makes a great “side table.”

  • It is your responsibility to keep the code to the studio lock boxes at hand. UI Custodial Staff is unable to unlock any UICB studio doors for students, please do not request that they do.

  • DO NOT enter a studio if there is a class in session. Plan ahead, get things you need to work with from the studios prior to classes starting. Check the posted studio schedule outside the door to see when the studios are open.

  • A Safety Manual on materials used including SDS sheets is available in each of the studio rooms.

  • The studio monitors are there to keep the studios working and stocked, and not to clean up after all of us. The studio monitors are also your fellow students, please do not interrupt them unless it is during their posted hours.

  • When you open lock box to use the room key, please scramble the code once you have replaced the key.

  • Safety procedures are listed near the door in each studio.

UI Center for the Book Studio Access Policy

UICB MFA and Certificate Students, including BLIS Students

• UICB students may have access to all UICB facilities once they have either taken a course in that area or passed an equipment safety exam and been approved by the area head.

• If not registered for a class in a particular facility, students should speak with the area head about their intended use of the studio and equipment. Depending on use of studio and scope of project, students may need to pay a lab fee.

• Students not registered for a course should be mindful of class deadlines, confer with area head, and plan their time to work around the needs of currently registered students.

Non-UICB Students

• Students not enrolled in the UICB MFA or Certificate Program must be currently taking a UICB class in order to use equipment and facilities.

• No children allowed in studios except for special events.
