FAQ
What is the Center for the Book?
The Center for the Book is described in detail on our home page.
What is Book Studies?
It is widely agreed that "book studies" are scholarly investigations that include physical books in a substantial way. Many methodologies - for example, economics, history, literary analysis, religious or legal approaches - can be applied to studies of book production, authorship, reading, libraries, and other ways books have been created or used over a long span of human history.
What are the "arts and technologies of the book"?
In local parlance, this phrase is used to refer to "hands on" study of papermaking, calligraphy, fine press printing, bookbinding, and related subjects such as typographical design and punch-cutting, decorative paper making and artists' books, and so on.
Where are the facilities located?
Refer to our Facilities page for office, papermaking, press and classroom locations.
How do I schedule a tour of one or more UICB facilities?
Contact the UICB office. An appointment made at least 24 hours in advance is required. Longer notice is preferred to meet faculty and staff who share your interests.
Who do I contact about the academic program? What if I just want to take just one class but don't intend to apply for a degree program?
Refer to our Programs page.
Where can I view the items produced for sale by UICB studios?
Refer to our online Store.
Does the UICB take credit cards?
We take Visa and Mastercard.
How does the UICB acquire manuscripts for fine press publication?
In the past, the director of fine press printing would seek out manuscripts. Please do not send manuscripts to the UICB. Currently, there is no fine press at the Center for the Book.
I found our old family bible/photo album/letters/beautiful old books in family storage. How do I preserve those kinds of documents?
The Preservation Unit at the Main Library preserves and repairs books from the Libraries collections. UICB staff may be able to refer you to the appropriate private professional to care for your special documents.
Can the UICB bind a book for me?
The UICB is an educational program, but UICB staff may be able to refer you to possible book makers in the student or Iowa City community.
I have an old printing press/paper cutter in my garage. Can I donate it to the UICB?
The UICB has gratefully accepted donations based on program needs and interests.
How can I include the UICB in my giving plan?
The Center is grateful for your support. The preferred method of giving is through The University of Iowa Foundation. Please direct your gift to the benefit of The University of Iowa Center for the Book.
I plan to visit Iowa City. Can you give me campus maps and information on hotels and restaurants?
Iowacity.com lists contacts for restaurants, places to stay, and locations of interest. Additional information may be found at Arts Iowa and the Johnson County Cultural Alliance.
