Evidence in Old Books: Identification, Interpretation, and Preservation

Maria Fredericks

Maria Fredericks is the Sherman Fairchild Head of Conservation in the Morgan Library’s Thaw Conservation Center, where she was also the Drue Heinz Book Conservator from 2005-2018. She has held book conservation positions at Columbia University Libraries, the Huntington Library, the Winterthur Library, the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts, and the Library of Congress and has taught at the NYU conservation graduate program at the Institute of Fine Arts, the Paper and Book Intensive, where she also served as co-director for 30 years, and the Montefiascone Conservation Project. Fredericks’ most recent research and teaching has been focused on late medieval and early modern bindings made in Italy.

The William Anthony Conservation Lecture Series, hosted by the University of Iowa Libraries Conservation Lab, invites Book and Paper Conservators and Bookbinders to share their experience and work with the UI book arts community and beyond. Funded by a generous gift that established the William Anthony Endowment in 2001, it honors our first Library Conservator and the first bookbinding instructor at the University of Iowa Center for the Book.
